England Through the Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

An AMAZING place.
An AMAZING place. So compact and easy to get around, very historic, take a river cruise and dont miss out on the FREE railway museum, well worth a visit. Possibly stay away from the river area for food and drinks, they appear to be much higher priced. Great shops, The Shambles is a wonderful story of how York used to be. The cat walk/track and visit all the old pubs off the beaten track down the little alleyways.. York Minster a MUST..ANDREAGreece - 10Scored 10

We really enjoyed York. Everything seemed like walking distance so managed to see everything we had an interest in. Steeped in history and culture there is something for everyone here from those interested in architecture to foodies. I would recommend York Minster, the Shambles (and food market - so many great choices), walking the wall (that surrounds the city) and Betty's Team Rooms.Paul - 10Scored 10

One of the UK's most historic and accessible cities. Everything you would find in London but cheaper and more 'human sized'. In Spring it is just busy enough to have a buzz but not crazy. Fabulous architecture, a river in the city, outstanding hotels and restaurants and jolly street theatre. A must see. Stayed in Galtres Lodge - superb and more or less next door to Minster. Ate in hotel, Lucias and the famous Yak and Yeti. All brilliant. A walkable city and easy to reach by train from anywhere in UK but importantly is on the main East Coast line between Kings Cross and Aberdeen. But you don’t really need to pay. You can just walk around. The minster and city walls are wonderful. Marks and Spenser food is good if you are in self catering. The history of the city is accessible through good signage. The city streets are not very clean and there are too many beggars and vagrants hanging around to hastle people in the streets. Too many shops were selling cheap imported tat. One major irritation was that the Tourist information centre in the city centre was closed from 2.00pm, for "staff training" on the Friday afternoon when we were visiting, which impacted in a negative way on our trip,Westoby

Galtres is easily the best hotel that we have stayed in. Our room (5) was cosy, clean and great for people watching. Breakfast was delicious and made to order. You literally cannot get any closer to the city centre and the 25% discount on Shambles Q Carpark was brilliant. The staff were super and nothing was too much trouble for them. The Dean's Court is located literally across the street from the front towers of York Minster. The hotel is one of those older "Grand Dame" type of English hotels, with a lot of character.
